Alice: Madness Returns

Alice Madness Returns

This game is the sequel to American McGee’s Alice from Spicy Horse Games and EA back in 2000. Alice: Madness Returns picks up ten years after the first game and we see her being released from an insane asylum after losing her entire family in a fatal blaze.

After years of therapy, Alice is released into the care of a London psychiatrist but her mental state of mind deteriorates. She retreats into her fabricated Wonderland to try and find the truth. If we think of the fact that Alice is a young girl with a damaged mind, it seems to be similar to Sucker Punch. Or you could say Sucker Punch is similar to Alice. The trend of young hopeless girls is growing.

Trailer doesn’t show gameplay but if you’re of a weak constitution, give this vid a pass.

Platforms: PC, Playstation, XBox

Release: Early 2011

Wet

Wet Game Rage Mode

Rubi Malone is a hired gun and will do any job…for the right price. Pistols, shotguns, uzis and samurai swords are weapons of choice. The opening level of Wet shows Rubi tracking a handover of a special package. Running through Chinatown and ending up on a shoot-out highway is only the prologue to Rubi’s latest adventure. Rubi is voiced by Eliza Dushku so that’s enough ass-kicking for anyone.

Power ups in Wet are gained by the acrobatic or stylish kills by Rubi. Wet debuted at E3 in 2009. I remember reading that originally Wet wasn’t going to be made due to budgetary constrictions. The production was too far along to abandon the project so it was decided to go ahead.

Good points

The soundtrack to this game is one of the best I’ve ever heard in a game. It riles you up and gets up ready for a blood-soaked fest of slashing, shooting and killing all round.

Rage Mode occurs when Rubi is overcome with bloodlust and it happens a few times in Wet. The screen goes red, black and white and Rubi goes on a killing spree to rival Uma Therman’s scene in Kill Bill against The Crazy 88 gang.

Freaky 1950 style ads appear between levels. Just to warn you, since it’s completely out there. It’s definitely alternative.

Bad points

At times, the angle and timing of jumps is crucial and clunky controls do cause fatalities.

Killing the big bosses ends up as cut scenes and you press the corresponding buttons. No skill is involved is this, it’s anti-climactic.  The production team cut corners on this aspect of the game.

Other cut scenes where a pivotal moment occurs can be a nightmare to get timed right. If you watch the video below, the final scene on the highway is a nightmare to get timed right. On the first playthrough of Wet, it took at least a dozen times to get past that nightmarish point transforming you into a button monkey.

There’s conflicting reports of a sequel to Wet but a sequel seems unlikely.

Verdict: Move over Uma, there’s a new assassin on the scene.

Darkstalkers BB Hood Mural

Remember BB Hood from Darkstalkers? She’s the cute little girl and when skipping sings, ‘La-la-la, la-la-la’. Of course, that’s until she whips out an AK47 and drops landmines from under her cloak.

The niece of gamer and Darkstalkers fan Ken wanted Red Riding Hood on her wall. He went one step further and gave her something better for her sixth birthday. This BB Hood mural which is morbid and equally fantastic.

Meow Meow Happy Fight

Meow Meow Happy Cat

I had to blog this. Meow Meow Happy Fight is about giant time-travelling kitties. It was developed by UK indie game developer Big Pixel Studios for the iPod Touch and iPhone. Meow Meow Happy Fight is released today with in intro price of $0.99/£0.59/€0.79 but will go up to $2.99/£1.79/€2.39 soon.

Normally in games set in the future the world is in chaos and crumbling apart. In Meow Meow Happy Fight, it’s the exact opposite.

Everyone is too happy, extremes of anything are bad.

Happy Cat travels back in time to see the not so happy reality we live in present day.

Happy Cat comes to destroy.

Fable III Trailer

I adore the Fable franchise, it was one of the main reasons I invested in an XBox 360 instead of the same generation Nintendo or Sony consoles. Fable 3 looks like a great addition and I can’t wait for it to be released.

Lionhead Studios developed the Fable franchise after the success of the Black & White series. Black & White is the only PC game I play time and time again, followed closely by Dungeon Keeper 2 developed by Bullfrog. Ironically Peter Molyneux was involved in all three of these productions. Games where you choose your own path whether being benevolent or evil holds an appeal to a mass audience.

Those who dare to hope, find nothing to hope for.

Amazon XBox 360 Rock Band Wooden Guitar

Today, the Amazon Deal of the Day is a wireless wooden guitar for Rock Band on the XBox 360. The guitar is a wooden replica Fender Stratocaster. Not a bad for a saving of $200.

Street Fighter Vs. Tekken Game

Very interesting news on the games front. There’s a Street Fighter Vs. Tekken game in the developmental stages at the moment. This will be the first time Capcom and Tekken combine. We’ve had the other combinations of Capcom Vs. Marvel, Capcom Vs. Marvel and Capcom Vs. Namco. It’s certainly an interesting development, but I wonder if the Capcom Vs. series is getting desperate and running out of steam? I don’t mean anything negative about the partnership, I’m sure it will be fantastic. I’m questioning the concept of the Capcom Vs. series.

The usual suspects from Street Fighter feature in the game. Featured Tekken stars will include popular Kazuya Mishima and Nina Williams. On another note, Nina’s own game Death By Degrees was a horrible clunky game to play through, so I’ve lost a bit of respect for her.

This game is being developed for the XBox 360 and Playstation 3 consoles. It’ll be at least another year down the line before we hear more about Capcom Vs. Tekken. We’ll keep y’all posted.

Update: It’s Street Fighter Vs. Tekken, not the whole Capcom crew.

Darkspore Preview

Darkspore

Darkspore is an addition to the Spore series developed by Maxis (developer of The Sims series). It’s due to be released on 2nd February 2011 for Mac and PC. No doubt Darkspore will expand to other game platforms.

Spore was one of the most illegally downloaded PC games of 2008. In Spore you played as a cell from primordial ooze, battling enemies, surviving and evolving into a creature. Thousands of different creature combinations means that adding a funky colour, offensive and defensive abilities  makes your Spore creature unique. Progressing through the game, your creature develops into a tribe, a civilisation and eventually sets out for space.

Darkspore picks up where Spore finishes.  Travelling through space, you must stop the Darkspore conquering planets and galaxies. The addition of organic offensive and defensive capabilities, otherwise known as “genetic heroes with different combat abilities” makes Darkspore an interesting game. The main storyline of the game will be a common thread with all the players but every single playthrough is unique. I’m sure you could say that about a lot of games but in Darkspore, there’s thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands of combinations.

Darkspore is primarily a lone cowboy single player game but it’s important to note that social gaming is important to Maxis. A four player co-operative mode is available as well as co-operative multiplayer battles. One can only imagine the headaches when your team splinters apart against your rivals.

The Darkspore screenshots makes it look like it could also be set in a hellish underworld instead of space. Just sayin’.

New Xbox 360

Xbox 360The new Xbox 360 is being released today with major improved features and overhaul in design. In other words, it’s a upgraded console to keep gamers happy for a little while longer before the next generation console is released.

  • The clunky power cable is now a part of the machine.
  • Xbox has a whisper quality instead of jet engines taking off.
  • 250 GB hard drive is built in.
  • Built in Wi-Fi for social gaming.

There’s no mention if this overhauled console is lighter or heavier than the original Xbox 360. If you’ve moved an Xbox 360, it’s like carrying a sack of potatoes.

The new Xbox is specifically designed to match Microsoft’s new gaming controller called Kinect, which is the Microsoft equivalent to Sony Playstation’s Eye Toy.

I’m sticking with my Xbox. The first two reasons would make me upgrade but space isn’t an issue and I don’t play online games. It’s unlikely that a person could jam up 250 GB of information onto this Xbox but when it’s full you’ll just have to delete stuff instead of buying another hard drive.

Are you upgrading to Microsoft’s latest redesigned console?
